Percentage Strips
To understand percentages, students need to work with concrete materials and visuals that show them how much percentages represent. This interactive percentage strips tool gives students the visual input they need to model, investigate, and compare percentages.
Using the free online percentage strips manipulative is easy. Simply drag percentages onto the canvas and remove them by clicking and dragging them off the canvas. Use the “Unit Double” button to display two whole units on the chart. To write annotations on the chart, click the pencil tool and erase them using the eraser. Press the trashcan tool to erase the canvas.
If you’re looking for suggestions for using the interactive percentage strips stool, try these activities:
- Ask students to model a certain percentage, such as 75%
- Ask students to model addition, subtraction, or multiplication problems featuring percentages.
- Ask students to model a percentage and write the corresponding fraction using the pencil tool
- Ask students to model 100% in 3 different ways (40%+30%+30%, 50%+40%+10%, etc.)
